A semiquantitative method to count vaginal polymorphonuclears (Gram's stain, X200)
The PMN numbers were assessed semiquantitatively (Gram-stain, magnificatio x200) in the relation to EC as follows: • PMN-0 – PMN absent to rare; • PMN-1 – PMN present but less numerous than EC; • PMN-2 – PMN numbers equal or slightly higher than the numbers of EC; • PMN-3 – PMN more numerous than EC. It is not uncommon to encounter on the same smear fields without or with very few PMNs and areas with aggregates of EC and high numbers of PMNs. If aggregates of EC are accompanied but numerous PMNs these FOV were not skipped nor deemed unsuitable for exploration.
