Aganglionic (lacking ganglion cells) segment of the sigmoid colon of a four week old male infant. This section of colon was exposed by surgery to treat Hirschsprung's disease, a condition in which blockages form in the large intestine because of a lack of nerve cells in part of the intestinal muscle. The tapered segment at the right is the anal mucosa.
