Aganglionic (lacking ganglion cells) segment of the sigmoid colon of a four week old male infant. This section of colon was exposed by surgery to treat Hirschsprung's disease, a condition in which blockages form in part of the large intestine because of a lack of nerve cells. The surgeon performed abiopsy to determine where the ganglia are present.
