Amazon Flatworm, Peru
An unidentified species of terrestrial planarian, or flatworm, in the Amazon Rainforest at Loreto, Peru. Most planaria are aquatic, but numerous fully-terrestrial species can be found in the Amazon Basin. Most Amazonian species are rather large, averaging 4-5" when extended, and brightly colored. Almost nothing is known of their biology except that they lay eggs and several species have been observed feeding on small land snails. Most have probably not been scientifically described.
