Chimbu woman breast feeding piglet, Papua New Guinea

A Chimbu woman in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea breast feeds a piglet. Pigs are a very valuable commodity in this area as they are used to buy brides, in general commerce and trading, feasts and important ceremonies. Pig ownership is a sign of a man's wealth and are kept alive until needed at all costs. Small pigs unable to compete against siblings or orphaned piglets were routinely breast fed by nursing mothers. This mother was photographed in 1939 by Australian patrol officer Ian Skinner.
