Deadly Stinging Caterpillars
Stings from the social caterpillars of the saturnid moth genus Lonomia are responsible for several deaths each year in South America. When people accidentally brush against them, the stings from their venom-filled spines can produce a horribly painful death after several days of agony from severe internal bleeding, renal failure and hemolysis.
