Diabetic neuropathy. Shown is the conversion of extra blood glucose to sorbitol and fructose. Accumulation of fructose and sorbitol impairs nutrient absorption and waste secretion by the neuron, resulting in the buildup of toxins. It also impairs the transport of impulses along the axon and the production and transport of nerve growth factors.
