Dinoflagellate, SEM
Colorized scanning electron micrograph of a Dinoflagellate. This free-swimming protist has a cell covering structure (theca) that differentiates it from all other algae. The name "dinoflagellate" refers to their forward- spiraling swimming motion. They share features common to both plants and animals: they swim, and many have cell walls.
