Leak Channels
3D illustration depicting how leak channels in the cell membrane take advantage of the concentration gradient of ions to move ions from the cytosol to the extracellular space. The cell membrane is in cross section to view a cross section through the leak channels. On the left, the leak channel is closed, preventing ions from moving across the membrane. In the middle of the image, an arrow indicates the direction of the concentration gradient between the intracellular and extracellular spaces. On the right, the leak channel is open, allowing ions to travel from the cytosol to the extracellular fluid.
