Non-tuberculous Mycobacterial - NTM CT scans

A 66-year-old man, a non-smoker, complained of difficulty breathing, loss of air, loss of appetite and body weight, productive cough accompanied by frothy white sputum, night sweats and increased temperature in the evening hours. After spirometry, which showed restriction in the small airways with a decrease in the vital capacity of the lungs, this patient was referred for a Sputum Culture lab test and CT lung scan. On this Axial CT scan, we can see fibrous changes and thickening of the parietal pleura dominate on the left side in the apex of the lungs. Multiple cystic lesions of the "emphysematous bulla" type with subcentimeter diameters are present on both sides of the lungs. Multiple opacifications of the lung parenchyma, like dirty parenchyma on the left side of the lungs, also. Positive cultures were found in two sputum lab tests, thus confirming the existence of Mycobacterium avium complex.
