Non-tuberculous Mycobacterial - NTM CT scans

A 66-year-old man, a non-smoker, complained of difficulty breathing, loss of air, loss of appetite and body weight, productive cough accompanied by frothy white sputum, night sweats and increased temperature in the evening hours. After spirometry, which showed restriction in the small airways with a decrease in the vital capacity of the lungs, this patient was referred for a Sputum Culture lab test and CT lung scan. On this Sagittal CT scan, we can see diffuse & multiple fibrous changes and thickening of the parietal pleura along the entire lateral thoracic wall. Multiple cystic lesions of the "emphysematous bulla" type with subcentimeter diameters are present also in the lung parenchyma. Positive cultures were found in two sputum lab tests, thus confirming the existence of Mycobacterium avium complex.
