Non-tuberculous Mycobacterial - NTM CT scans

A 66-year-old man, a non-smoker, complained of difficulty breathing, loss of air, loss of appetite and body weight, productive cough accompanied by frothy white sputum, night sweats and increased temperature in the evening hours. After spirometry, which showed restriction in the small airways with a decrease in the vital capacity of the lungs, this patient was referred for a Sputum Culture lab test and CT lung scan. On this contrast Axial CT scan, (performed following intravenous injection of iodine), we can see thickening of the interlobar septa, enhanced interstitium with multiple & diffuse opacifications of the lung parenchyma, like dirty parenchyma & "ground glass" on both sides of the lungs, dominant on the left. Micronodular and nodular changes along the lateral thoracic wall on both sides, predominantly on the left. Positive cultures were found in two sputum lab tests, thus confirming the existence of Mycobacterium avium complex.
