Normal neurons (top) versus neuropathy (bottom). A lack of oxygen (hypoxia) causes the neurons to shrink and the synapses between neurons to grow. With larger synapses, electrical impulses can no longer pass effectively from neuron to neuron. This reduction in electrical activity causes a corresponding decrease in the mineral content of the synaptic fluid.
