Onychomycosis

A 45-year-old man was referred for onychodystrophy. It turned out to be distal subungual onychomycosis, the most frequent clinical variant of onychomycosis. It begins at the distal age of the nail with onycholysis and subungual hyperkeratosis. The distal portion of the nail plate is lifted and detached from the hyperkeratotic bed with onycholysis. If left untreated distal subungual onychomycosis extends progressively to involve the whole nail. the treatment should be topical and systemic. Fungi most commonly cause of onychomycosis are dermatophytes, and among these mostly Trichophyton rubrum. Fitzpatrick skin type (FST) phototype 4.
