Parous Hymen, Illustration

Hymen of woman who has given birth. The hymen is a membrane that partly covers the opening of the vagina. It's strength, elasticity, form and appearance can vary greatly from one individual to another. In most cases it's presence or condition is not a reliable indicator of virginity. Physical exercise, tampon use, medical exams, masturbation, and injuries can all rupture the hymen besides sexual intercourse. In some cases the hymen may be elastic enough to allow sexual intercourse without altering it's appearance. Thus the tradition in many cultures that a bride must bleed on her wedding night to prove her virginity is completely unfounded.
