Podoconiosis - brown skin

A 52-year-old Ethiopian man, Fitzpatrick Skin phototype V, has bilateral though asymmetrical swelling of the lower legs, which started 8 years before this photograph was taken. His blood test for filarial antibody testing was negative. Diagnosis: Posoconiosis, a neglected tropical disease, is a form of lymphoedema that occurs in tropical highland areas in individuals living and working barefoot and exposed over many years to irritant volcanic soils such as subsistence farmers, gold miners, and potters. Hence, its diagnosis is often delayed. It can be prevented if affected patients wear shoes that protect the skin against the irritant soil.
