Prosthetic valve thrombosis

Surgical aortic valve replacement is the most widely used treatment for aortic valve disease. In nonelderly adults mechanical valves are often recommended because of lower rate of reoperation. However, mechanical valves require lifelong anticoagulation because of their thrombogenicity. A photograph of a mechanical aortic valve prosthesis removed due to thrombosis and dysfunction in a 47 years old man is presented.
