Uneven distribution of polymorphonuclears on a vaginal smear
Micrographs of 4 areas of a single slide showing extreme variations in numbers of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and PMN/epithelial cell (EC) ratios. The exquisite heterogeneity of cellular densities imposes the need for a much larger surface examination. Squares delimit areas of the field of view (FOV) seen at x1000 so that 4 FOV at x200 (PMN -0, 1, 2 and 3) have a surface area of 100 FOV at x1000 (HPF). It is not uncommon to encounter the same smear fields without or with very few PMNs and areas with aggregates of EC and high numbers of PMNs. If aggregates of EC are accompanied but numerous PMNs this FOV were not skipped nor deemed unsuitable for exploration
