Water Lettuce in Peru
Water lettuce, Pistia stratiodes, in the Peruvian Amazon. There is debate as to this floating plant's origin, although South America and Africa are the leading candidates. It has become a serious invasive problem in warm regions of the world, including the southern US. Although it resembles a velvety lettuce, it is a member of the arum family and its flower has the typical arum form.
