COLON, DRAWING
The colon is the part of the intestine extending from the end of the small intestine to the rectum, measuring about 1.40 meters in length. Fecal matter is formed in the colon and transported through it. Like the rest of the digestive tract, it is lined with a mucous membrane composed of an epithelium, glands and conjunctive tissue. The glands contained in this mucous membrane play a specific physiological role in the uptake of food. (cross-section of a tubular gland).
