They form the oldest fossils, dated at 3.5 billion years old and still remain one of the largest and most important group of bacteria on earth. During periods of rapid growth called blooms, cyanobacteria can produce the toxin microcystin. Black=carbon, white=hydrogen, red=oxygen, blue=nitrogen.
