Dermestid Beetles Cleaning Human Skull
Various stages of Dermestid beetles feeding on and cleaning the flesh from a human skull found at a crime scene. Dermestidae, commonly referred to as skin beetles, are scavengers that feed on dry animal or plant material such as skin or pollen, animal hair, feathers, dead insects and natural fibers. The beetles are significant in forensic entomology, since some species are known to be associated with decaying carcasses; this helps criminal investigators to determine the postmortem interval (the time that has passed since death). They are also used in taxidermy and by natural history museums to clean skeletons.
