GRANULOCYTE
A polymorphonuclear cell moving along the surface of a blood vessel. A special fixation technique, ultra-rapid in situ freezing has been used to stop the cell in its movement. Mobility is a characteristic feature of polymorphonuclears which play an essential role in the organism’s defense system. Polymorphonuclears exhibit chemotaxis (orientation along a chemical gradient, for example in response to the presence of substances produced by bacteria) and phagocytosis (the capacity to ingest foreign particles). Pseudopodes (projections along the side and under the cell) have a double function. They participate in cell movement and englobe foreign particles which are incorporated into the cell’s cytoplasm and digested.
