Graphene is a single one-atom thick layer of carbon atoms, densely packed into a benzene-ring structure. Stacks of graphene sheets form graphite, one of the allotropes of carbon. The structure easily cleaves between planes, leading to the utility of graphite writing pencils. Graphene is essentially a nanotube unrolled, a single layer of atoms arranged like a honeycomb. Graphene looks like molecular chicken wire and is the thinnest of all possible materials.
