An illustration of the different types of spina bifida and a baby with spina bifida. Spina bifida is caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neutral tube. A development congenital disorder, vertebrae remain incomplete (open) in their formation. If the opening is large enough the spinal chord emerges through the bone. 1 baby in 30 is born with one or more major birth defects. Most are correctable with modern surgery.
