TONSIL, DRAWING
The tonsils are small round structures lying on either side of the uvula composed of lymphoid tissue. Tonsils participate in the organism’s defense system of the upper airways. The lymphoid tissue in tonsils produce white cells and antibodies against outside aggression. In case of repeated infection (otitis, sore throat), the tonsils may become infected and have to be removed surgically. Tonsillectomy is a benign operation frequently performed in children.
