NEURON
Pyramidal neurons of a rabbit hippocampus. The hippocampus is part of the cerebral cortex with characteristic large sized pyramidal cells. The hippocampus is a nerve center implicated in memory. Each neuron has a cell body, an axon (a protruding segment of the cell body with more or less distinct contours), and several dendrites. The irregular contours of the dendrites results from the presence of dendritic spikes which connect with other neurons for message transmission. Nerve impulses are propagated to the target cell (another neuron, a muscle, etc.) via the axon. X 440
